Information Literacy

Information Literacy (IL) is an important component of education and crucial to modern ways of teaching, learning and research. The main purpose of Information Literacy is to equip students, faculty and researchers with skills that enable them to retrieve information efficiently; and to use same effectively and appropriately for their purposes.

To this end, the Library offers general orientation to the Library, its resources and services for new students. The orientation serves to introduce students on where to find what for their work. An essential part of this is how to use the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC).

The University Library, with its ever expanding collection of resources on mining, science, technology and related disciplines, offers the following as part of its mandate to the academic community, on request:

  • Tailored presentations emphasizing appropriate reference sources, and electronic resources, for specific disciplines;
  • Assist students and faculty as individuals or in small groups, to develop skills for using information resources, evaluate information and effective search strategies;
  • Training on building bibliographies and using the appropriate citation for different disciplines.
